01. 教师介绍Jean-Laurent Picard

Jean-Laurent Picard is the teacher and the researcher at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, CNAM, Paris, France. In 2003, he got his master’s degree in I.T. & Electronics Engineering from the Engineering School of Information and Digital Technology (EFREI) in Paris, and the micro-master’s degree in Supply Chain Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2007.Jean-Laurent Picard has more than 15 years of overseas working experience, especially in the field of engineer training and management. He used to work for Carrefour Groupe (2003-2007) and Groupe Casino (2007-2014) , and Wesdar Home Appliance in Hongkong until 2018. He is adept at factory assessments, production controls and management of engineers.

02. 采访|Interview

问:Do you have any expectations for the DCI students?

您对中法学子有哪些期望呢?

答:The idea of DCI, at the beginning, was to establish a learning environment which is similar to engineering school in France, where we don't only learn technical things,we also learn all kinds of things useful for a high-profile manager. So that means anything about management, law, accounting, and many different things especially in a strong opening to international environments. The reality of today's world is that we cannot spend our whole life working just for our country, or with people that speak our language. An engineer who can only speak his own language and cannot communicate with people from other countries will be very limited in his career. So I think the expectation for DCI students is to fit inside this idea that an engineer is not only someone who can solve technical problems. It's someone who is able to work with people from very different origins and cultural backgrounds, able to communicate with them and able to solve problems together. That's really the number one expectation, a true opening to different people and an ability to work together.

中法学院创办的初衷是建立类似法国工程师学院的学习环境。在这里,特别是在面向国际环境大力开放的前提下,学生们不仅要学技术,还要接触各类高级管理相关课程,包括法律法规、财会相关的多样化知识。现在的人们不可能一辈子只在本土企业工作,也不可能一辈子只与讲本国语言的人打交道。如果一位工程师只会母语,无法与其他国家的人交流,那么他的职业生涯将非常受限。我期望学生们能深刻领悟这样道理,工程师不仅能解决技术难题,也能与来自不同国家、有着不同背景的人一起工作,合作交流。学生们能包容不同的文化,并具备团队协作能力,这是我的首要期望。

问:What course are you teaching in this semester and what is the goal of the course ?

本学期您教授哪门课程?课程教学目标是什么?

答:In this semester, I' m giving a course about digital transmission. It's a course about all the techniques that are used to send digital data from a source to a destination. That means, for example, like broadcasting TV signal or sending information through Wi-Fi or through a GSM phone or even storing information on a hard drive, on a USB drive. Every time we need to send information, there are some difficulties. It' s not simple. During the course, the students will learn many different techniques such as data compression, error detection and correction. They will learn the limits of transmitting data because you cannot send data at unlimited speeds. There are some physical reasons why we cannot exceed certain speeds in certain kind of environment. We study all of these (in this course). We are able to establish those limits and to determine together how to build a system that can reach those limits. At the end of the course, the students are able to program by themselves an entire transmission systemwhich meets both the sending part and the reception part. They will do data compression, error correction and all kind of data processing in order to achieve this.So I think it's a very hands-on course where the students will learn a lot of theoretical and practical things. It's usually a fun because we do a lot of programming. We work with python, and we work with excel. At the end of the course, I hope the students are able to do something by themselves, which is usually very pleasant.

本学期我的课程和数字信号传输相关,课程重点是数据从源头发送到目的地所用的技术,例如,电视信号广播、通过 Wi-Fi 或手机发送信息、将信息存储在硬盘或 U 盘上等。信息传输的过程并不简单,总有各种各样的障碍。在课程中,学生们将学习到不同的技术,例如数据压缩、错误检测和纠正,还会研究数据传输上限——在某些环境中,基于一些物理因素,信息不能以无限的速度传递。我们在课上将设置这些限制因素,并共同建立一个能够达到传输上限的系统。在课程收尾阶段,学生们能自行编写整个传输系统的程序,同时满足发送端和接收端的需求。为了编好程序,学生们会进行数据压缩、纠错等各种数据处理工作,所以这是一门实操性很强的课,可以学到很多理论和实践知识。这门课也很有趣,包含了很多编程内容,也会用到 python 和 excel。课程结束后,我希望学生们能够自己动手做一些项目,应该会非常有意思。

问:What impressed you about the students?

学生们给您留下什么深刻印象?

答:In general, I'm impressed by the fact that some students who are interested in technical topics join a university such as DCI, which has a very strong international background. When you join DCI, you know that on top of learning are computer science, electronics, mechanical engineering. You are also going to learn language a lot. English is very important, and French as well. Many courses like mine are taught in English, so this is not easy at all. It's quite courageous for the students to join this kind of program, knowing that their life will be a little bit harder than other students who just stick to pure Chinese teaching.

想学习工科的学生选择进入中法这样的国际化学院,这点很打动我。加入中法后,除了专业课:计算机科学、电子学、机械工程之外,还有很多语言课程,英语和法语都非常重要。像我的许多课程都是用英语授课的,对学生来说,这挺不容易的。所以学生参加这样的课程需要很大的勇气迎接挑战,因为他们的学习生涯会比其他选择纯中文教学的同学更难一些。

问:What do you think of the campus environment of the DCI?

您觉得中法学院的校园环境怎样?

答:Well it's a nice campus. It' s in the downtown of Dongguan, easy to access. Well,personally, I like Dongguan. It's a nice city where we can travel by bicycles. There is a metro. There are buses, a nice center town, a very nice countryside, a lot of public parks. So it's a nice city, nice place with good environment. We are in Guangdong. It's one of the economical heart of China. It's in Guangdong that so many high technology products are manufactured, (for example) in Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Zhongshan. Having the opportunity to study in a university in this area gives you the opportunity to meet companies that work in these fields and it helps to start your career early.

校园环境不错,在东莞城区,交通便利。我个人很喜欢东莞,这里可以骑自行车出行,还有地铁,公交,设施完善的城中心和乡镇,还有很多公园,总之是一个环境优美的好地方。此外,所在的广东省是中国的经济中心之一,很多高科技产品都是在广东生产的,(比如)深圳、东莞、广州、中山这些城市。在这里上大学的学生有很多机会接触到高新技术企业,有助于他们尽早开始职业生涯。

问:What do you think of the learning atmosphere in DCI and what do you think of the enthusiasm of the DCI students for learning?

您觉得中法学院的学习氛围和热情怎么样?

答:There are lot of learning opportunities in DCI. There is a lab that students can access to work on different technologies. I saw a drone, some electronic circuit balls that people can program. There are IT rooms where people have a free access to all kind of computers. There is the opportunity to go to France for one semester.

这里有很多学习机会,例如有实验室供学生学习实操,里面有无人机和可以编程的电子电路球,还有能免费使用各种电脑设备的机房。另外,学生还有机会赴法学习一个学期。

In 2019, the first team of students went to France. It was then the year of Covid in 2020. Personally, it broke my heart knowing that some students came to France to study but had to stay in their rooms for months. Afterwards, for three years, we taught everything with Microsoft teams so remotely. Teaching remotely is very hard for the teachers, honestly. Because we lose all the pleasure of talking with students. It is also extremely hard for the students. They cannot focus and cannot keep the interests in the course. So these last three to four years were very hard for everybody. I don't think it's a good example of what this is DCI trying to do. For sure the idea is to provide everybody with a good working environment and a good learning environment. The teachers in DCI are very competent teachers. I met many of the teachers in DGUT. They are very competent teachers. And the people who come from CNAM are people who also dedicate their life to teaching. So the objective is definitively to give the students the chance to learn, but the last three or four years were quite tough.

2019 年,第一批学生前往法国。紧接着2020 年疫情来了,学生们到了法国,却得在房间里一呆就是几个月,很让人心痛。之后的三四年里,我们只能用Teams进行远程教学。说实话,线上课对教师来说不太容易,毕竟失去了与学生面对面交流的乐趣。对学生来说也难,难以集中精力,难以保持对课程的兴趣。过去的三四年对每个人来说都很煎熬。这不是一个很好的经历,这段时期无法完全实现学院的办学目的 —— 为师生提供良好的工作环境和学习环境。中法的教师都非常称职,不论是中方教师还是法方教师,一心为教学付出。我们尽全力让学生学到更多,可惜过去三四年确实相当艰难。

Now what I can see in the class is that students participate. They do the job. They can do teamwork. We are teaching in a section called telecommunications, which is a very very wide cope where we can learn a lot of things. I will focus my course on software programming, which is strange, because I' m teaching to students who are learning telecommunications. Most of my course is about software programming. Some students choose telecommunication (as their major) may because they don't like software programming. But when they come to my course and realize there is so much software programming to do, everybody does it and most of them produce good work. So I think it's a good sign indicating that students are flexible. They understand that what we teach is important for them. They will make necessary efforts to complete the course. That's nice for a teacher.

如今(恢复了线下授课),我在课堂上看到学生能积极参与,能完成学习任务,能进行团队合作。我们的教学领域属于电子通讯,涵盖范围非常广,要学的有很多。我的课程重点则偏向软件编程,但我的学生都来自通信工程专业。学生选择通信工程(作为专业)可能是对编程不太感兴趣,结果当他们来上我的课,发现居然有这么多的软件编程任务,不过出乎意料的是每个人都能参与进来,而且大部分学生的作品都做得不错。我认为这是一个很好的现象,说明学生很灵活,对知识的接纳程度高,他们明白上课的内容对自己很重要,愿意付出努力完成课程。对老师来说这点很让人欣慰。

Also I teach in English. English is not my primary language. I teach to students whose mother tongue is not English either. It' s not easy for anybody, but we don't care(about the challenges). We can see that there is a gaining attempt from the studentswho try to understand courses taught in a foreign language. They try hard. I think, at the end, the result is really not bad. I can see during the exam or when I receive the projects that most students actually do have a good understanding of what I try to teach them. This is probably the best example of how much effort the students put in their learning.

此外,我是用英语上课的。英语不是我的母语,也不是学生的母语,这对双方来说都不容易,但我们还是克服了困难。老师们看到越来越多的学生在努力吸收这些用外语讲授的课程,我觉得最终的结果都还不错。从考试或者平时的项目里不难看出,大部分学生确实学懂了我教的东西,这也是学生们学习热情的体现。
