On the afternoon of October 16, 2017, the Forum onthe Big Data Revolution and Data Science Jobswas held in the lecture hall sponsored by the Center for Faculty Development and organized by the Institute. Professor Gilbert Saporta, a professor from Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers and President of French Statistics Academy, was invited to lecture on the forum. Leading officials, all staff and students of the Institute attended the lecture. The lecture was so wonderful that it attracted many teachers and students from other colleges and departments and there were no empty seats in the hall.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Gilbert Saporta expressed his greetings to the teachers and students present in French. Although the students knew a little about French, they still felt very excited and relaxed and responded to Professor Gilbert Saporta inFrench.

Professor Gilbert Saporta gave a lecture according to the current situation and application of big data, and asked the students a question: "Does it mean an end of the theory if it is widely used? " At the same time, he makes a statement and explanation on the challenges brought by the data revolution to data statistics and the proposition that big data is still "NO. 1".

Many students were attracted by Professor Gilbert Saporta's wonderful lecture and they asked Professor a lot of enthusiastic questions. One student mentioned the application of big data in the field of mechanical engineering. Professor Gilbert Saporta cited examples of insurance companies in the way it judges car driving. Generally, insurance companies analyzed whether the driving is safe or not by collecting driving data while technicians in the mechanical field can manufacture machines or equipment in line with the market according to the big data analysis of the market. Based on big data analysis, an accident is caused by dangerous driving, the insurance company has an excuse to pay less compensation. Thus, the visual and monetary compensation brought by dangerous driving can be reduced, and it can supervise drivers to drive safely, to improve the overall social order.

Finally, Professor Gilbert Saporta expressed his expectations for the students of theDCI, hoping that they will step forward in the international cooperation between China and France in the fields of informatization and intellectualization of theory, methodology and technology and finally achieve their goal of international engineers.

Roll over, fellow students! Swim in the ocean of knowledge and strive to reach the other shore!
