DGUT-CNAM Institute, Dongguan University of Technology, is the first Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run institute in Dongguan and the sixth in Guangdong province approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. The cooperatively-run institute was founded by Dongguan University of Technology in cooperation with Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers. Taking intelligent manufacturing as its main direction of development, it is a non-independent legal entity subordinate to Dongguan University of Technology and is an important part of the global teaching network of Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers.

DGUT-CNAM Institute is the product of the integration and optimization of the educational concepts and teaching systems of both parties, which relies on the long history, mature mode, and outstanding contribution of Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in the field of engineer training, and is based on the rapid development of specific sectors of Dongguan University of Technology in the field of science and engineering. Meanwhile, in accordance with the uprising needs of the industry transformation and upgrading of industry institutions in Dongguan, the cooperatively-run Institute comprehensively introduces the French engineer training system, and gradually forms a new engineering educational model with both its own characteristics and internationally common characteristics.

Located in Guancheng campus of Dongguan University of Technology, the cooperatively-run Institute upholds the motto of Dongguan University of Technology " The more a man learns, the more he knows his ignorance” and aims at the three schooling philosophies of "application-oriented, local-centered and internationalized", which also serves as an inevitable measure for Dongguan University of Technology, a local university, to cultivate international professionals based on the needs of local economic and social globalization, and is also consistent with the positioning of talent training and development growth pole and innovation experimental area in Guancheng campus.

The cooperatively-run Institute aims to cultivate high-quality engineers with international vision, international rules, trilingual skills in Chinese, English, and French and cross-cultural communication skills as well. The overall idea of running the Institute is to introduce the high-quality educational resources of Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in an all-round and substantive way, strengthen the international level of teaching staff, teaching mode and monitoring mechanism, adhere to its own characteristics of higher education, and make full use of a large number of practical internship opportunities provided by the local manufacturing industry, and to facilitate each other in the three aspects of talent training, scientific research and social service in order to build itself into a local first-class and domestic well-known Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run Institute.

History of Development

In January 2013, Peng Dekai, the commissioner of science, technology and education cooperation of the Science and Technology Department of the French Consulate General in Guangzhou, and Matthew, the director of science and technology projects, visited Dongguan University of Technology. After knowing about the discipline, specialty and scientific research of the University, they put forward the intention to promote the cooperation between French universities and the University.

In March 2014, the University signed an Agreement of cooperation framework with Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers to build a cooperatively-run institute and established a preparatory team.

In June and November 2014, the presidents of the two universities exchanged visits and signed a formal Agreement on cooperatively-run institute.

In March 2015, the Dongguan campus of Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers was unveiled.

In April 2015, the University sent four professional principals to Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers to participate in the completion of the professional talent training program and implement the introduction of courses and teachers.

In October 2015, witnessed by Bai Tao, then member of the Standing Committee of Dongguan municipal Party committee and director of the Organization Department, and Ma Yansheng, Minister counsellor of the Embassy in France, the University signed the agreement on joint education of master's students between Dongguan University of Technology and Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers and the agreement on establishing a scientific research cooperation platform between China and France with Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, which means the University will accept the authorized certificate and degree that is issued by CNAM, and completes the construction of the inter-institute cooperation framework of "one characteristic college, one cooperation center and one scientific research platform" jointly built by the two universities.

In March 2016, the University formally applied to the Ministry of Education for instructions on bidding for a Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run institute; The People's Government of Guangdong Province and the Department of Education of Guangdong Province also sent letters to the Ministry of Education respectively, requesting support for the establishment ofChinese-foreign cooperatively-run institute by the University and Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers.

In July 2016, the school sent personnel to participate in the expert’s assessment and project defense meeting organized by the Ministry of Education, and Xing Feng, deputy director general of Guangdong Provincial Department of Education and Li Jinjun, director general, also attended.

Since October 2016, the University has submitted a centralized evaluation and rectification report to the Ministry of Education. During this period, it has conducted repeated negotiations and communication with the French side, rectified and implemented the evaluation opinions one by one, and finally met the standard requirements of the Ministry of Education.

At the end of February 2017, the Ministry of Education sent a letter to Guangdong Provincial Government approving the establishment of DGUT-CNAM Institute, Dongguan University of Technology.

Training model

The students admitted by the Institute are not only students of Dongguan University of Technology, but also students of Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers. They are registered as students of the two universities and can study in the two universities. During their undergraduate study, they can go to Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers for exchange and study. The credits they have taken are mutually recognized by the two universities. If the students meet the conditions for graduation and degree awarding, they will be awarded the diplomas of the two universities.
